Before lunch on the first day of any job, I learn the name of every person on the call sheet. Every single one.
Why names first
A set runs on trust, and trust runs on being seen. The focus puller who knows you know her name will tell you when your eyeline drifts. The driver who feels respected will get you there early. Acting is the smallest part of a shoot day; belonging is the largest.
How I do it
I photograph the call sheet, repeat names back twice, and write one detail beside each — “Tomas, two daughters”, “Iris, night bus”. By the second setup I can greet forty people properly, and the whole production exhales.
“The camera records performance. The crew remembers behaviour. I want both to be good.”
The exception that proves it
Once, on a night shoot in November, I forgot the rule — too tired, too cold. That was the only first day that ever felt long. Never again.
